The Department of Foreign Languages teaches language skills the students of all specialties and years of study at the Faculty of International Relations. All the students study English as the first and compulsory language, as it is the language of international business communication. They study English for all years at university and receive an additional qualification of a translator. Since the second year of study all the students except journalists study one more foreign language, they can choose among Spanish, German, French, Turkish and Japanese and study it during five semesters. The department plans to enlarge the list of foreign languages available. The students have an opportunity to make a foreign language their optional subject. Usually the department offers Spanish, German, French and English for beginners as optional subjects.

Iryna Bonatska, PhD of Philology, assistant professor and the Vice President of Ukrainian Association of Spanish teachers, stands at the head of the department. Five assistant professors, twelve senior lecturers and twelve lecturers provide the process of study. At the third year of study the students have translation probation. They can hone their skills in:

• five multimedia classes to practise in simultaneous and consecutive translation;

• Information Center of EU at the Department of Foreign Languages:

• Center of European Council.

All the teaching staffs participate in research and development programme “Interactive methods of teaching foreign languages as a means to form communication competence of students majoring in “International Relations” and create textbooks, training aids and methodical recommendations to provide a high level of the teaching process. The teaching staffs participate in international and national scientific, theoretical and practical conferences; they publish the results of their achievements in national and foreign professional journals.

Twice a year the teaching staffs organize panel discussions within the scientific and methodological seminar “Vital problems of teaching foreign languages in a non linguistic institution”, where they discuss the modern tendencies of teaching foreign languages. The staff members present their achievements for the previous academic year. The most interesting ideas later make foundations for scientific research articles and reports at scientific and practical conferences. The major trends for scientific research are:

Modern teaching technologies. Innovations in education. Professional efficiency of the university graduates in modern society. Problems and perspectives of modern educational environment. Mastering language system (at phonetic, lexical, grammar and pragmatic levels) as the basis for efficient communication. New tendencies and technologies of foreign language teaching in Ukraine. Forming, testing and evaluating of foreign language competence of the students. Foreign languages at non linguistic institutions: methodical resources to teach foreign languages for special purposes and ways to improve skills of professional communication.

The Department of Foreign Languages pays great attention to students who demonstrate aptitude and inclination to scientific research. Students can participate in annual students’ scientific conferences which deal with vital problems in the spheres of economics, law, international information, journalism and tourism. Traditionally the reports are prepared in English but recently there has appeared a new tendency – to prepare reports in other languages as well. Together with their teaching staff the students take part in students’ conferences, panel discussions and debates at other universities in Ukraine and Europe and try to establish business relations with foreign universities.

The Department of Foreign Languages encourages and supports development of not only scientific but also creative potential of their students. There are contests for the best translation, best clip and best theatrical performance. Students who study Spanish take part in annual Cervantes readings and visit club of Spanish language lovers backed by the Spanish Embassy.

КEuropean languages weeks, Orient languages celebrations and charity festivals have become a good tradition. There both teaching staffs and students represent traditional dishes of various cuisines and national crafts and decorations prepared by them personally. Money gathered during such festivals goes for charity – both students and teaching staffs visit orphanages and hospitals and donate money to help fighting warriors.
